Our Bruin beer
Oud Bruin beers (meaning old brown in Dutch) is a brown beer with an amber color, which is generally tart.
Acidity is achieved by adding lactic acid bacteria and letting the fermenting beer sit for several months.
The yeast will eat all the residual sugars and the acidity produced by the bacteria will be more and more noticeable.
The style of Oud Bruin beers is very close to the red beers of Flanders, but the two styles still have differences.
Oud Bruin beers are characteristic to certain regions in Flanders where they were the local beer drunk daily by the inhabitants before becoming a regional specialty. A bit like the people of Brussels drank gueuze daily at the same time.
Oud Bruin style beers are both produced by historic breweries such as Vander Ghinste and Vestraeten and its Duchess of Burgundy but also by young micro-breweries such as Verzet which has made it its specialty.
