Brewery Oud Beersel

Oud Beersel was created in 1882. Since then, the brewery has had its ups and downs. It has known periods of states of grace, before the First World War in particular. The brewery often changed its name and owner.

The tough period for the gueuziers was undoubtedly after the Second World War. The craze for gueuzes was at its worst and people turned more to pils from the 1950s.

It was also the first gueuze museum in 1973.

At the end of the 1990s, the brewery was no longer doing well at all. In addition to the sales which are at their lowest, the real problem is that there is no buyer and that the craftsman in position is getting old. As we headed for a pure and simple closure, a resident of the town made the bet to buy it back and relaunch the production of lambic. In 2003 the buildings were sold to interested citizens.

Everyone thought he was unconscious and crazy, but in reality he had a thin nose. The enthusiasm for geuzes has been felt more and more since the period of the takeover, and three years after the transaction, Gert releases the first new ‘oude geuze’ from Oud Beersel.

The sale of lambic in cubi was a remarkable idea, lambic in its pure form being rarely sold to individuals. This conjuncture of good timing and good ideas will put the brewery back on track in a very short time.
